Unlike ruby, spinel owes its hue entirely to trace chromium and iron without the need for heat treatment in most fine specimens, making untreated natural material particularly valued by collectors. Its hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale also ensures long-term durability suitable for all jewellery applications.

Ultrasonic cleaning is generally considered safe for spinels that are free of fractures or inclusions, though it is always prudent to confirm the stone’s condition before using mechanical cleaners.
